CLEARink demonstrates its latest color e-paper displays at SID 2018

Color e-paper developer CLEARink demonstrated its latest wearable color e-paper displays at SID 2018. The most interesting display was a 1.32" 202 PPI color e-paper display that offer a color gamut of 30% NTSC (1931 CIE) which is not up to par with regular emissive displays but looks quite good for a reflective display.

CLEARink's displays are electrophoretic displays that achieve color using color filters on top of the display. The panels offer a fast refresh rate which supports video.

A tour of E Ink's booth at SID Displayweek

Here's a short video showing E Ink's booth at SID Displayweek 2018, where the company demonstrated its latest E Ink displays, devices and prototypes. Some of these displays looked very good, especially the new color panels!

E Ink had some very interesting displays in there - including the new medical patch developed with LTS, the high resolution (400 PPI and 600 PPI) E Ink developed together with JDI, a range of new writing pads (from Sony, ReMarkable and Onyx Boox), the GVIDO music stand display, plastic logic's OTFT-powered panels and E Ink's upcoming beautiful color e-paper displays.

CLEARink to supply e-paper displays to a leading tablet maker in a $10 million deal

Color e-paper developer CLEARink announced that is has signed a supply agreement with a leading tablet maker to start supplying tablet displays beginning in 2019. The agreement calls for at least $10 million in initial orders.

The CLEARink-enabled tablets will feature sunlight visibility, high resolution video and color, and will offer a much higher battery life compared to LCD or OLED based tablets. This is CLEARink's first major supply agreement.

E Ink and Dai Nippon to launch a new E Ink Prism based retail system

In March 2016 Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) announced a strategic partnership with E Ink to co-develop and co-market products that use E Ink displays - mainly targeting the retail market and also security cards and smartcards.

E Ink Holdings now says that the two companies will launch a point-of-purchase (POP) interactive advertising display next month. The POP solution will be based on E Ink's Prism color-variable e-paper technology. The system can "sense consumers' shopping behavior" and display responsive colors and patterns "in line with the sensed behavior". The idea is that such a display will make products more visible and attractive to consumers.

CLEARink and Merck sign a materials development agreement, aim to bring TIR displays to the market by the end of 2017

CLEARink announced that it signed a comprehensive materials development agreement with Merck with an aim to bring CLEARink's reflective display technology to the market by the end of 2017.

CLEARink displays are based on a specially designed reflector film that can vary its brightness by modulating the total internal reflection of ambient light from film. The display uses a single electrically charged particle suspended in a liquid. The technology is called TIR (Total Internal Reflection) and the company believes that its manufacturing costs will be lower compared to other reflective display technologies. The displays offer full-color, low power (slightly above E Ink), outdoor readability, low cost and video support (low latency).

Sony shows a color E Ink FUS Watch prototype

Sony's FES Watch (and the 2nd-Gen FES Watch U) is covered with a flexible E Ink display so you can change the design of the watch and the write-band at will. At CES 2017 Sony is showing a next-generation FES Watch prototype that uses a color E Ink display as you can see below

E Ink and Toppan Printing developed a 32" color flexible e-paper display

E Ink, in collaboration with TOppan Printing, developed a 32" flexible color E Ink display. The companies presented a first prototype, and the plan is to produce this display by the end of 2017.

This is the largest color flexible E Ink ever developed. We already saw flexible 32" Mobius E Ink panels, but these were black and white. This display uses color-filters produced by Toppan. The display is 0.4 mm thick and it can be curved (it is not truly flexible by the end user). The companies say that this new display offer a higher color gamut compared to previous color E Ink displays.

Singapore installs 11 color E Ink bus stop information boards

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority installed new public transportation information boards at 11 bus stops across the city. The boards are based on color 31.2" E Ink displays with LED front light. The system design and integration was performed by Visionect.

This pilot project chose an ePaper solution because it is extremely energy efficient and runs on solar cells, completely independently from the electrical grid. If the project proves to be successful, this may lead to wider adoption on up to 200 bus stops in the next few years.

E Ink demonstrate new color and flexible e-Paper panels at SID 2016

E Ink had a very interesting booth at SID 2016, showcasing its new color e-paper displays, and also other new and existing displays and prototypes.

First up, we have E Ink's new Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP), which is a high-quality full-color E Ink display. ACeP enables rich-color displays, which is enabled by colored pigments and not color-filters like in E Ink's older color displays.

Dai Nippon Printing and E ink to co-develop E Ink based products

Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) announced a strategic partnership with E Ink to co-develop and co-market products that use E Ink displays. DNP will use its strong sales network in Japan to market new products targeted at the marketing and sales promotion segment of the retail market, and the security card and smartcard business for the financial and transportation market segments.

E Ink will provide e-paper displays and engineering support to DNP. The two companies will focus on two product types. The first will incorporating E Ink Prism color changing film into retail promotion displays used by retailers for new product launches, in-store promotions and numerous marketing and merchandising activities.
