CopyTele awarded a new US e-paper technology patent

CopyTele (CTI) announced that it has been awarded two new US display patents. One of these patents (#8,519,944) covers e-paper resolution, contrast and response time improvements for the generation of images using a dual particle system. The new patent is related to Nano Field Emission Display technology (nFED). CTI now has 14 electrophoretic display US patents and 24 nFED US patents.

The UN headquarters in New York installs the world's largest tiled E Ink display

E Ink Holdings and MpicoSys unveiled the world's largest tiled ePaper (E Ink) display sign at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The eWall was designed by the architects of the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), as part of a renovation of the North Delegates Lounge, and was donated by the government of The Netherlands. The eWall is 6x7 meters in size and it is made from 231 7.4" E Ink Pearl panels (33 tiles by 7) to a total resolution of 26,400 x 3,360.

The eWall can show scheduling, news and other relevant information to delegates and has a design mode that shows high-res large scale images and it can simply fade seamlessly into an unobtrusive wall when turned off.

PocketBook to use Plastic Logic's 4.8" flexible E Ink panels in the next-gen smartphone e-book cover CoverReader

PocketBook's CoverReader is a smart cover for mobile phones that adds an e-reader functionality via a 4.8" E Ink display. It integrates with the Android OS to allow you to easily view books and information on the E Ink panel. The first model will ship for Samsung's Galaxy S4 soon, and the company plans to develop more versions for more Samsung, HTC and Sony phones.

PocketBook also announced that they will use Plastic Logic's flexible 4.8" E Ink displays in the next-gen CoverBook. The current generation CoverBook uses a glass base panel. PocketBook says that the Plastic Logic's flexible EPD 4.8" display will be manufactured in Plastic Logic's Dresden facility. This new display has a range of benefits - such screens are flexible, shatterproof, ultra-thin, ultra-lightweight, power saving and daylight readable.

Yotaphone to finally ship in November for €500

Remember YotaPhone's smartphone with the two 4.3" displays, a 720x1280 LCD and a 640 × 360 E Ink? According to reports, the company is finally getting ready to ship their groundbreaking phone in November 2013. It will cost €500 in Europe at launch. 

The YotaPhone will have a dual-core 1.7Ghz PU, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It is an exciting phone, but today several companies offer smartphone covers with E Ink panels on them which may be a better solution for most people.

PopSLATE to use Plastic Logic's flexible E Ink displays in their iPhone 5/5S 4" E Ink second screen display

Towards the end of 2012 we posted about PopSLATE, a IndieGogoproject that raised $219,000 to develop an iPhone 5 cover with an E Ink display. Today Plastic Logic announced that popSLATE will use their technology to their new iPhone 5 and 5S always on 4" second screen display.

Plastic Logic's displays are based on E Ink are are flexible and shatterproof. They use the company's unique plastic OTFT backplanes.
