E-Book readers

Electronic book readers are devices that allow you to store and read books (digitally, of course).

Obviously the display of such devices is critical - it should be very easy on the eye (if you want to spend long hours reading books with it...), should look good in direct sun, and be very thin and efficient - to allow thin devices and a long battery life.

E Ink is the perfect display for electronic book readers as it answers all the requirements.

E-readers with e-ink

Indeed there are many e-reader models out there, available today that use e ink's displays. The popular Amazon Kindle is one such device, and Sony also has a line of readers with e inks.
See our e-reader product index for a full list of devices!

Today's readers usually support not only books - but internet browsing, e-mail, news services and more.

Companies will keep trying to make the e-books smaller and more useful. We can expect to see color displays soon (useful for magazines and websites).

Other display technologies

E Ink is not the only technology that can be used for e-books. Another interesting technology is OLED (organic LEDs). OLED displays are also very efficient and thin, and in fact can be used to maker rollable displays. We might start to see OLEDs be used in book readers in the future. For more information on OLEDs, check this link.

Another interesting technology to watch is Pico proejctors. These tiny devices can project huge image, and be embedded in other devices. Perhaps it'll not replace the main display, but it'll be interested to have a book reader that can also project large images - maybe for news or web browsing.
