Update: the contest is over, we have two winners with two great ideas!

Last week we posted about E Ink display persistency - and the fact that those displays can actually retain an image for years. Now it's your turn to try and think of applications for this feature. Besides making some nice B&W photo frames - what cool things can be done with a display that can stay persistent for such long times without a power source? For example gadgets that only need to change the display once a day...

Kindle Paperwhite photo

Just post your idea as a comment below, and be sure to leave your e-mail (you can also send the e-mail address in private, of course). We'll choose the two best ideas, and award them with new e-readers (either a Kindle paperwhite or a Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight). This content is open for everyone. E Ink, who were kind enough to give away the two e-readers, will ship them worldwide. We'll choose the new winners on December 11th.

Such persistant e ink display could be used - with a built-in note tool or calender behind - as a communication tool for a family, where parents work on different shifts and want to exchange information between each other and with children, what is to be done during a day (to do list), about whereabouts of the family members, if somebody leaves etc. A device with such a display could hang on the fridge to be visible for all the family

Thanks for your idea! Can you please leave your e-mail or send it to us via the contact form in case you win an e-reader?

I would love to have a eink (colour would be better) A4 sized wall calendar that displayed a month view with events & birthdays on each day.  The only thing that would change in on a daily basis is a circle would move to the next date.

In public environments, as health centers, for example, where there is always need to stick info to the public, considering that such infos change all the time, such boards could be replaced by e-ink displays. All displays would have their messages changed at once from a central point. Clean and fast.

I think e-ink is great for public-transport time tables. Nowadays, at least in my hometown of Dresden, every tram station is anyway electronically connected to the control centre. However, most info, like time table and construction schedule is still given by printed paper sheets in the station shelter. Here I see excellent potential for e-ink display.

I see few usages for this feature:

1. congradulation card. there can be a pre-defined list of congradulations or /and an option to insert them manually + option to add picture.

2. school courses or after-school activities list.  can be used at schools or at home

3. menu list in the restaurants.

4. behaviour rules  or important notices (to be put in public places, like hospitals)

5. road signs

I think it would be awesome to have it on windows as sun protection, not only it would allow for the user to create its own church window at home (or simple latticework, for those classic users), it could also be programmed for maximum energy efficiency pursuit, depending on sun intensity and position, by just connecting it to a sensor. A window that can be controlled like this is all architect's dream!

Very nice idea, but this would require the panel to be translucent. I wonder if it has been shown that E Ink can do that.

Using e-ink displays for billboards would have the following advantages:

1. It can be changed much faster and without the need of the people climbing them. You would simply pop in something like a USB stick and transfer the new commercial image, or change it through Wi-Fi or something like that.

2. Because to hold an image doesn't require power, the billboard sign doesn't need to be connected electrically with wires, it can have a battery.

3. It would be lighted during the night with side lamps, just like paper billboards.

Business cards - no need to print new ones and throw hundreds of old ones away, when your email-address changes :)

Come up with a standard type of label (bundle it with RFID, counterfeiting chip, ..) that can be recycled and reused. Labels could either be returned to the store (and get some sort of discount/coupon) or used freely elsewhere (including at home, having the right re-write HW/SW).
Think of it as an 'industry standard'. If well designed, many 'label' applications could fit this standard format. Having the option to return it or re-use it would be an environmental efficient solution.
Having a sort of standard implemented will also open the door for different categories of labels and writing equipment (i.e. labels with remote update features, different resolutions, ...). (A whole new category of 'consumable' / new market around it).
(think of it as a sort of a new DYMO standard, with some formats compatible (overlapping) both for the industry and the consumer market).
Hope you like it.
Best regards.

Depending how long it actually last. One could use it on grave stones and use it in place of metal plates with written words(some of those are a bit blurried now). One can also use it in museum displays. wenona01@gmail.

Actually had a few more, but earlier commentors got to them first...  ;)

1. Price displays.  Large ones, like fuel price signs at petrol/gas stations.  Small ones, like those page- or poster-sized ones frequently seen at grocery stores.  Tiny ones, like those used on shelves at supermarkets (and those could be linked to the store's database for pricing changes).

2. Tide times/charts for coastal areas.

I think pet tags would be a great application for E Ink!

They could be updated with a new address when you move or a new phone number, and also dates of last rabies or immunization shots, special medical alerts, and also update your Vets phone number if you change Vets, maybe the micro-chip number too...

The display would have to be quite small like the tags you get when you license your pet so that would limit the amount of information you would be able to display.

People spend a ridulous amount of money on their pets so cost may not be too much of an issue.

According to the 2011-2012 APPA National Pet Owners Survey, 62% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 72.9 millions homes

It could be used for wall calandars.  If coupled with RFID and an app, the calandar could be activly updated with appointments via smart phone.

Banners for convention booths.  They could be rolled up and stored for the next convention or plugged in and changed for the next booth display.

Already mentioned, but business cards.  If coupled with RFID or QR code and an app, the information could be transferred to smart phones easily.

Wall clocks.  The numbers could be stationary on a circular clock with moveable hands.  Plug it in to change the clock face or font.

How about restauranmt menus? Whenever I eat at a nice place (not as often as I would like), I am often struck by fancy menus on high quality card stock with caligraphy, raised lettering, etc. Most of these places change theri menus often: monthly, weekly, or even daily. Save some trees: plug 'em in while you enter the new options, and then turn them off for the staff and customers.

The comment above is mine. Here it is, edited and with my email address:

Valuable business tool to showcase specials, products, social media fans, employees, business info, vacancies, current stock, promotions, advertising space, meeting agendas, business related affirmations and so on :

In terms of business, I think it could be utilized to advertise the specials of the day at cafes, beauty salons, retail stores and other shops. Or for example, to display the "fish of the day" or the "dessert of the day" without having to ask the waitress! It could also be used to promote new products or products of the day/week in your store.

This feature would also be great in shops or small businesses to showcase facebook or twitter fans of the day/week or star employees of the week and to display daily rotating pieces of history/information about your company to add a personal touch to the business. It could also be helpful in advertising available job vacancies.

Alternatively, it could be used to show holiday opening and closing times and any in-store competitions/promotions you are currently running. Or to display any products that are out of stock at the moment and the date that they will be arriving again.

It may also be applied as available daily advertising space in-store or in the businesses restrooms, changing rooms and so forth to earn extra income. Could be a great feature for the public bathrooms while washing one's hands!

Or a super way for employers to expose staff to different cultures/languages/cuisines by adding revolving related data/facts or alternately to post daily announcement updatesIn addition, it could be employed to replace paper handouts/indecipherable whiteboard agendas at office meetings or to display staff rosters (possibly saving paper too!).

It could also be utilized to display daily affirmations and quotes which may be relevant to your business. For example, if your company is part of the retail/clothing industry, it could showcase related daily inspirational fashion quotes.

At home daily inspiration/gratitude journal/learning tool/roster:

Daily inspiration/personal goal related affirmations
I think it could also have some other very neat uses at home. You could employ it for personal use and have inspirational quotes in your home every day. Your very own exclusive daily motivator! For instance, if you are trying to lose weight or increase your self confidence, you may have corresponding daily motivational quotes to assist you with your journey.

Gratitude wall
It  would also be amazing as a revolving list of things/people you are grateful for each day, almost like a daily gratitude wall/ diary! So you can update it every day and have a glance and remember the things you were thankful for yesterday.

Personal accomplishments/ activities/ progress monitor/ daily objectives/ favorite quotes
It could also be used to highlight ever-changing personal accomplishments and achievements, kids achievements or their progress, daily/weekly activities, daily goals or reminders, or even just favorite, humorous quotes from books or movies, basically your very own feel good tool.

At home learning tool
It would also be a very useful application to learn a new language, perhaps by displaying a new sentence every day/or every week. Or it could be used to portray the letter, number, word or animal of the day for little ones, a great learning tool!

Weekly dinner recipes/ cleaning roster
Furthermore, it could be applied at home to display the daily dinner recipes for the week. Everyone would know what's for dinner and if your not there your significant other or children would have an easy recipe to follow!  Or maybe as a rotating cooking or cleaning roster in flat sharing situations.

Meaningful Wall art/home decor!
Plus, it would add some very stylish b/w decor/wall art to your bedroom or to any part of the home!

Many thanks, Therese

It might be cool to refresh the beloved Etch-a-sketch toy and bring it into the digital age by replacing the silver screen with an e-ink display.  With some added memory you can keep all of your creations on one device.

jho@qdvision.com

Here are some of my Ideas:

1. A color image or even a black and white one that could remain fixed for almost an indefinite amount of time could be used for art galleries. I would love to be able to transfer my art to a fixed eink page and sell it in galleries, and stores. I think many artists would if they knew of such a thing.

2. Another possibility is educational posters. As a teacher I often hang up posters that shred and yellow over time. The ability to hang up posters that would never fade, or diminish, and that perhaps I could even change as needed would be vastly useful.

3. Another possibility is to have an eink license plate that could be updated when a new registration happened. I imagine the DMVs would love to have such a thing.

4. Another way such a device could be helpful is as a frozen image for a doctor to use of an xray that wouldn't need to be protected from light, and perhaps could even change angles as needed.

5. Movie posters!

6. Fast food advertising by the checkouts. I bet that would get you a ton of purchases, especially if the eink could be remotely updated.

7. Las Vegas Bill Boards. Not everyone can afford the multi million dollar boards with their fancy animations. The smaller hotels and perhaps even the larger ones could offer advertising using eink, both outside on their billboards, and inside by their slot machines, etc.

8. Visa cards with ID.

9. Simple images for pets to help them cope with being without their friends for lengths of time.

10. Greeting cards!

11. Business cards.

12. If cost effective a second screen for those who want a static image for tutorials, while the active one utilizes programs to follow them.

Looking forward to the reader you're going to send me. And hurry up and get out an eink color reader so I can read my color books, and magazines on it.

Best of luck.

Thanks.

How about a display read-out for structural monitoring of buildings and bridges?  These are very low-power applications, often powered by energy scavenging from the structure being monitored.  A persistent, zero-power display would allow inspectors to interrogate the latest monitored results by a drive-by photograph of the e-ink display, without needing to power up the device. The device could update the display on a periodic, infrequent basis, say, daily or weekly, using only scavenged power. The display could be human-readable, a QR code, or both.

E-ink is a revolutionary Display for advertising market:

E-ink display can use instead of advertise sticker on both sides of buses and trains bogie. because these advertise can stay many days and catchy and of course no time wasting for changing advertise.

Also use it on local bus stop, trams and trains station, air port, for attractive B&W advertising hording.

Also at schools notice or any organisation's  board, I have remember that every time I have to open this notice board and I have to stick paper on this board, by using E-Ink display we can change this notice fast and without open any box, because there is no need of this box....:)

In a mall or in a small shopkeeper they can display kind of "Today's Offer" board it's stay day long without supply of any kind of power.

E-ink display can use whole place where people have to change advertise or number after some days or ofter some hours... eg. petrol pump, price tag etc...

That is a great idea. it can serve as well a targeted marketing approach. When the bus is downtown, it shows an ad for superb vacation on the islands, when in the suburbs, I do not know, a discount of the TV set in the local shops or whatever. The bus advertisement can be changed easily, and the advertisement will be less expansive for the company (fewer display time) and more targeted, therefore much more company will advertise. The ad company and the bus company will love it !

Transparent displays in car windows to tint them whenever you want, as they are persistent it doesn't matter if the car is not started.

A touch layer over a screen to use it as a sketch book or a black board.

In road signs, where information is not needed to be change too often such as HOV lanes from 6am to 9am or such. Hours for a store where they can change them for the holidays or "be back in ten minutes" information. -Seth@Solitarywolf.com

I personally would like to add a few.

1. I see a lot of paper being wasted for college notice boards, if these displays could be used there, with some material which might help in changing the display once in a while.

2. Sticky notes in the same line wastes a lot of paper, again one big sticky note attached to your refrigerator and with the help of some instrument if you could scribble something on it.

3.Advertising would be possible in some extreme conditions where no body else thought might be possible, for example in mountains, or dessert, or the sea.

An idea to use E-ink qa dynamic pricing tags, e.g. on the shelves in a supermarket. In this way price changes, new products an current bargains can be included in the price.

With kind regards, Karin

There are a number of ways we could take advantage of this technology.

Simple ideas, such as a calendar for your wall, big ideas, such as replacing billboards with this technology, or even crazy ideas, such as replacing the panels of your car with e-ink panels and having the entire text of The Lord of the Rings plastered on the side of your car.

Actually, I think that it could make great wall displays. Instead of having wallpaper, in my house I would have giant e-ink panels. When I want to read a book, I can have the text on the wall. It could have glowlight so that my entire wall illuminates instead of having a light-bulb hanging from the ceiling. Also, if I wanted I could have a black and white version of the Sistine Chapel ceiling... but I would probably just have my favorite movie posters plastered across it in black and white e-ink instead. Expensive, yes... but not impossible.

First, let us start with the constraints:
- as far as I know, e-ink displays only exist in small sizes, I will stick with display under 7 inches.
- the display must take avantage of persistance as well as the ability to change. So there should be a rather long period of time between changes (at least one day).
- considering the price of an e-ink display, it should replace a device that is not as cheap as paper (replacing paper is profitable if you often change the display, but in this case it does not take advantage of persistence).
- it has to be in place that is rather protected from extreme temperature.

Judging from this, I would say an appropriate use for e-ink persistence would be a plaque. I am not sure that it is exactly the right word, so I will explain further. I am not talking about a commemorative plaque, since it does not really change and is often exposed to weather. I am talking about the plaque that you can find in a company for example to tell whose office it is. It doesn't often change, but sometimes it does, when your title changes or when your office changes. It is inside a building so it is protected. This kind of device may then be used to display the week schedule of a given room (in a university or a congress). It might also be useful to display names on an electronic doorbell.

Of course, it would require a portable device allowing to change the display, possibly just by pluging it. Since the display is not powered, a wireless connection would be impossible. In order to make things easier when you have to change the display of several classrooms, for example, each display should have an ID. Thus, you can change what is displayed on a computer before going and pluging each display to a portable powered device.

Advertisement represents a lot of paper consumption and waste - but eInk would not be an advantage for private custommers because of its cost compare to paper and does not present additionnal advantage regarding online advertisements, noone likes to stare on a screen for that.

But, it also represents a lot for shopkeepers who have to change them regularly and in a big scale. This market represents the whole group of supermarket, shop, store keepers and could be an investments compare to paper or lighting displays.

Everyone has a set of family games at home, especially one of them containing chess, backgammon, chinese checkers without counting the stacks of other family game boxes which fill shelves and cupboards.

Such a table would provide the ease to play instantly to any family game wanted as those mentionned above but also brand game like monop**y by just setting all wished playground from an external memory support like an SD card (which take much less place)

Other games a bit more for adults like poker or blackjack could also be setted and would avoid people to buy special playgrounds (and could be adapted to number of people or so...).

Additionnally, creative people like Warg*me figurines collectors could even create there own playground on a computer and play on their eink table with their bought figurine.

To summarize, it s targetting the private custommers, of different ages and social environments and bring new abilities (easy storage, adaptability, creativity, ...)

It might sounds completely crazy to go back to an B&W display for a cellphone but did anyone need it 10 years ago? (Thus, RGB Eink displays are existing)

But one sure thing is everyone needs longerlife battery on their cellphone (especially now it s possible to go on the internet with ...) and keeping their small sized cellphone. Despite the progress in energy storage, the storage in a smartphone does not feed the daily need some someone, using a GPS, internet so if we can same on the display consumption, cellphone costummer would appreciate it.

Also, number of people have a cellphone without needing to watch films (there is no need for a fast response display for a cellphone.

Especially for business phone, this hardware would be the main target: One only need to phone with it, does not need to use it in the dark usually. The point to offer business phone to employees is to be kept in touch at anytime one needs, and during business trips, the battery level could be a limiting factor.

There is already an e-ink smartphone prototype by Onyx:

http://www.androidauthority.com/onyx-e-ink-phone-one-week-battery-life-video-124044/

And maybe an Amazon dual display phone:

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/47290/amazon-kindle-smartphone-e-ink-prototype

Displays like fuel level and car mileage do not change that much overtime (or is partially changing overtime) and current LCDs could be replaced by eInk displays with eventually backlights for night vision.

First time I saw about the Optimus Maximus Keyboard (http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/), it look to me so great that I really wanted to get one, but the issue was every single OLED microdisplay keys were hell expensive and I would have to save really a lot in order to get the complete keyboard.

I think doing something like that with the eInk technology could be a good compromise between price and abilities.

One could design a keyboard with eInk B&W displays on the keys (the advantage from pad to physical keys which was to keep a more confident interaction with the fingers on the key is still the same). The main advantage would be to go from one keyboard layout to the other by just pressing a key for the ease of a user who needs to switch (I m working in an international customer service and those kind of devices would be really helpfull for russian, chinese, greek people and so one who have to write emails in their language but also in english)

Almost all my ideas were already posted, especially the one about enhacing games and boardgames or miniatures games background (that would make me extreemely happy).

So the only one left is this: E-Ink floor tiles.

Tiles to construct HUGE floor sufaces that can display patterns, more or less detailed (depending on the dimension of the tiles, could be possible to use them as pixels). This would allow to create interaction in large public spaces, such as complex buldings, big museums (MOMA, Louvre), or just public squares. The user could ask for a direction (the shop "X" or the "office Y") to the front desk of the building or using his mobile phone, the tiles would then change from the "normal pattern" to the path for reaching the user's objective. Normally the tiles can display funny or interesting patterns, they can be used for advertisement, or to create "ATTRACTOR paths" to the promotion of the day in the supermarket, or the main event of the museum.

(I sent an email with the form wiht the same content)

An e-Ink panel with a touch layer can double up as a second screen for the many android phones out there supporting MHL standards. (We know that USB is a one way communication port.) The micro usb port on the Android Phone can output the display to an e-Ink display with a touch layer. The screen would retain the image, until it changes. Any user interaction via touch would be read via the same micro-usb port, after which the display changes. Of course, there could be an app running in the background which could control the secondary display. Even the E-Ink screen could be made as a primary display, with the back-lit LCD as the secondary, only to consume multimedia… Hope I could convey.

As the title suggest, a graphic pad which display what you are drawing or writing beneath (so a e-ink display and touchpad stack). This might be easier for graphic designers or just for private customers for drawing easily like on a real paper sheet and getting it straight digitally. The eink has an advantage over emissive displays for this application as it s a display more confortable for the eyes (which is indispensable for drawing for hours)

This one is a special for my grandmother:

Elderlies get usually more difficulties with electronics: one example is my grand'ma who gets problems to dial the correct phone numbers on her phone. So preprogrammed key would be the solution but she also get difficulties with it sometime.

The idea here is to make a eink keyboard on the phone. One programs the eink display to constantly display the name of the people in memory. The person would just have to press the name (like in a cellphone). The advantage is of course that this displayed list would not change so much overtime, it s more confortable than a piece of paper aside the phone to remember which number to dial for a certain contact, and this would not cost any energy.

The first thing that comes to mind is to use the display as a form of torture.  A display of beliefs can be put up and will not change until the captive agrees to it.

Second:  disabled people could use it as a learning tool:  the display won’t change until they grasp the concept.  This could also double as a punishment for intransigent students.

Third idea:  Since we don’t live in a totalitarian society in our ever-changing political landscape full-color displays can show the portrait of the current occupant of an office for years without the use of power until a new one is sworn in and needs to be uploaded.  A sidekick to this idea is for private businesses to display the winner of an award until someone new wins it, i.e. employee of the month.

Fourth idea:  I think the best application is for areas where notes will have to be left in an environment that is hostile to the longevity of basic paper and is seldom visited, necessitating the use of very low power.  A display can be made waterproof or dustproof to resist elements and be useful in austere environments.  Examples include:  bases in Antarctica that are visited once a year; bases in the Amazon forest or Sahara desert; windmills (to leave notes on who last serviced it), nuclear missle silos could pictorally display how to launch a missle, orbiting space stations where copious amounts of data or notes may have to be left onboard while humans leave for months sometimes years at a time (depending on budgets) before someone else goes aboard again.

Fifth idea:  Time capsule!
